Jason R. Safran, after joining TCU’s Endowment team in 2012 and serving as interim Chief Investment Officer (CIO) for five months, was appointed the second CIO of Texas Christian University in December 2021.  As CIO, he oversees the daily operations of a team of seven professionals charged with managing the University’s Endowment assets and short-term investment portfolios. Prior to his appointment as CIO, he served as Senior Asset Manager for TCU’s Endowment and was responsible for researching and evaluating investment opportunities across asset classes.

Safran began his career as a research associate with John McStay Investment Counsel, an equity investment boutique. After business school, he joined Cimarron Asset Management, an institutional advisory firm specializing in the management of relative-value portfolios. Following a merger, he served as portfolio manager for Smith Asset Management, L.P., responsible for relative-value equity strategies. Prior to joining TCU, he was a senior investment analyst for Texas Capital Bank.

Mr. Safran earned his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006 and his BBA in finance and minor in economics from TCU in 2001. Mr. Safran is a CFA® charterholder and serves on the strategic advisory board for the CFA Society of Dallas/Fort Worth. He also currently serves on the investment committee of Texas Health Resources.

A member of the TCU President’s Cabinet, Safran is also TCU’s liaison with the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees.  His commitment to the next generation of investment professionals includes classroom lectures, one-on-one mentoring, and ongoing engagement with a student internship program.
